Acoustic Ratings Explained: STC, NRC, and What They Actually Mean for Pods

If you’ve ever stared at a spec sheet trying to figure out whether “STC 30” is adequate for your space, you’re not alone. These ratings get thrown around constantly in privacy pod marketing, and they’re rarely explained in a way that actually helps someone make a decision.

Here’s the plain-language version of what these numbers mean and how to use them.

*A quick note before diving in: I’m not a sound scientist or acoustician. What follows is drawn from over a decade working with a leading North American privacy pod manufacturer — learning directly from product and acoustic engineers, working with clients across a wide range of use cases, evaluating a broad spectrum of pods on the market, and my own ongoing research. It’s practitioner-level guidance, not an engineering reference.*

STC: how much sound gets blocked

STC — Sound Transmission Class — measures how effectively a structure blocks airborne sound from passing through it. Higher numbers mean better blocking. As a rough guide:

– STC 25–30: baseline sound blocking; normal speech can still be heard and followed through the barrier
– STC 35–40: generally considered good acoustic privacy — speech cannot be easily understood, and sound privacy is noticeable and adequate for most environments
– STC 45+: high levels of sound privacy where speech is barely audible; this is the range to look for in highly confidential use cases

For pods intended to contain confidential conversations — HR discussions, legal consultations, healthcare conversations — anything below STC 35 should raise questions.

NRC: how much sound gets absorbed

NRC — Noise Reduction Coefficient — measures how much sound a material absorbs versus reflects, on a scale from 0 (fully reflective) to 1 (fully absorptive). This matters most for the *inside* of a pod: a low-NRC interior will make a small enclosed space sound harsh and echoey, which is uncomfortable for calls and video meetings even if the STC rating for blocking outside noise is excellent.

A common mistake: assuming a high STC rating alone guarantees a good acoustic experience. A pod can block outside noise very effectively and still sound terrible to sit inside if the interior surfaces don’t absorb sound well.

Why these numbers get inflated (or misunderstood) in marketing

Manufacturers sometimes report the STC or NRC of a *component* — a single wall panel, for instance — rather than the assembled pod as a whole, including the door, seals, and any glazing. Doors and glass are almost always the weak point in an otherwise well-rated assembly, so a component-level rating can significantly overstate real-world performance.

Match the rating to the environment, not just the use case

The right STC rating depends as much on where a pod is going as what it’s used for. A few patterns worth keeping in mind:

– **General use cases:** for most everyday applications, look for STC 35 or above as a baseline for good sound privacy.
– **Low-concern deployments:** if sound privacy isn’t a priority and the goal is a fast, simple pod to deploy — a quick-call booth in a busy area, for instance — a lower STC rating can be perfectly adequate.
– **Quiet environments:** in spaces like libraries, where there’s little ambient background noise to mask sound, even small noises become noticeable. Low-STC pods are usually a poor fit here, since sound that would otherwise be masked in a busy office carries clearly in a quiet room.
– **Confidential environments:** medical, counseling, legal, and government settings, where conversations genuinely cannot risk being overheard, call for higher STC ratings — generally in the 45+ range discussed above.

Other acoustic metrics worth knowing

STC and NRC are the two ratings most commonly cited on pod spec sheets, but a few others show up often enough to be worth recognizing:

– **Rw:** the international equivalent of STC, defined under ISO 717-1 and tested per ISO 10140, used in metric-based markets and on products sourced from overseas manufacturers. It measures the same basic thing — sound blocking through a barrier — using a different test standard, so Rw and STC numbers aren’t directly interchangeable even though they look similar.
– **NIC (Noise Isolation Class):** measures sound isolation as actually installed in the field, rather than under lab conditions. This is a more real-world number than STC, which is why it’s worth asking for if a manufacturer has it — it accounts for how the pod performs once seals, doors, and surrounding conditions are factored in, not just the tested assembly.
– **Speech Privacy Class / Articulation Class:** measures how intelligible speech remains through a barrier, which gets closer to the actual experience of “can I understand what’s being said” than STC alone. Two products with the same STC rating can still differ in perceived speech privacy, which is where this metric adds useful nuance.
– **NC (Noise Criteria):** unlike the ratings above, NC measures ambient background noise levels in a space — how loud the room itself is from HVAC, equipment, and general activity — rather than how well a barrier blocks sound. It matters here because a pod’s *effective* sound privacy depends on both its own rating and the background noise level of the room it sits in; the same pod will feel more or less private depending on the ambient NC of its environment.

None of these need to replace STC and NRC in a typical spec conversation, but knowing they exist helps when a manufacturer references one of them, or when comparing products from different regions or testing standards.

Sound privacy and price tend to move together

It’s worth naming directly: higher sound privacy generally comes with a higher price tag. Pods engineered for higher STC ratings typically require more material and more engineering to achieve that performance, and that shows up in the cost. Lighter, more budget-built pods often perform at a lower sound privacy level as a result.

Neither end of that spectrum is wrong — they simply support different needs. The right question isn’t “what’s the best pod on the market,” it’s “what does this environment, and the people using it, actually require.” A quick-call booth in a low-stakes setting doesn’t need the same investment as a pod hosting confidential HR conversations. Getting clear on the required sound privacy level for your specific use case is what points you toward the right product, at the right price, rather than over- or under-buying.

What to ask for

When comparing pods, ask specifically for the tested rating of the *fully assembled unit*, including door and glazing, not just the wall panel. Ask what testing standard was used and whether the test was conducted by an independent lab. And match the rating to your actual use case — a phone booth for quick calls doesn’t need the same STC rating as a pod meant to host confidential HR conversations.

A few tools if you want to check your own space

Before specifying a pod, it can help to get a general sense of the ambient noise level in the space it’s going into, or the sound level inside a pod you’re evaluating. Here are a few you could try — these aren’t sponsored, and I’m not vouching for the quality of any particular one, but they could be useful starting points:

– **Smartphone sound meter apps:** on iPhone, the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app (free, developed by the CDC) is generally considered a reliable option, with accuracy reported within about ±2 dB — a meaningful result since iPhones use a consistent, factory-calibrated microphone across devices. Decibel X is a widely used free alternative on both iOS and Android with a more polished interface. On Android specifically, accuracy varies significantly from phone to phone since microphones aren’t standardized the way they are on iPhone, so treat Android readings as more directional than precise.
– **Dedicated Type 2 / Class 2 sound level meters:** brands like Extech or REED Instruments, generally in the $100–150 range, offer meaningfully more accurate, consistent readings — typically within about ±1.5 dB — without needing full lab-grade Type 1 equipment.


– **Professional acoustic testing:** brought in through an acoustic consultant using Type 1, code-grade equipment, this is the right call when a project’s final decision genuinely hinges on precise numbers, particularly for confidential-use environments where getting it wrong has real consequences.

For most day-to-day specification decisions, a phone app is enough to sanity-check whether a space is quiet, moderate, or loud. Save the more rigorous testing for projects where the stakes justify it.
